How we got here
Like it says in the blog description, I've been a Star Wars fan basically my whole life. And to varying degrees, my wife and my kids are fans as well. Everyone has their particular favorites, and less favorites, but by and large we're all pretty well-versed in the Star Wars saga.
I'm also very fond of pop culture projects, doing "all of X in order", and journaling about it as it goes along. I'm an easy mark for getting luredinto something like this very blog before you.
So it was a simple matter of hanging out and talking with my kids the other day and realizing that, although I have seen every Star Wars movie at least once (and many of them far more than twice) I do have some gaps in my viewing experience if you also take the tv shows into account. And they are canon, so I see no reason not to. I've seen some of Clone Wars, but none of The Bad Batch or Rebels. I did enjoy The Mandalorian a ton, and I'm looking forward to the Book of Boba Fett and whatever else Disney+ has planned. At any rate, somebody said "Wouldn't it be cool to watch the entire Star Wars story in order?" And I had to admit, yes, that sounded awesome, ambitious, and a lot of fun!
My thirteen-year-old son Donovan said he would also like to undertake that kind of endeavor, and that pretty much sealed the deal. Without him I'd just be a grown man watching a bunch of movies I've already seen and a whole slew of cartoons I never made time for before. But now it's a family bonding experience. So much so that Donovan will be writing a fair share of guest posts on this blog as well.
Anyway, that's the backstory. In the next few posts I'll get a bit more into the exact plan for the viewing order, my personal history with Star Wars, my philosophical approach to this project, and let Donovan introduce himself and share his initial thoughts as well. We always rewatch Lord of the Rings every December, so that will keep us busy until the end of the year, but look for the first posts about rewatching The Phantom Menace in early January 2022! And thanks for being here!
